Oonuma Shuzoten

Onuma Shuzoten is a historic brewery founded in 1712 in Murata, Miyagi. Its flagship brand “Kenkonichi” is said to have been named in the early Meiji era by Matsudaira Masanao, the first governor of Miyagi, in praise of the sake’s quality. Committed to brewing rooted in its local community, the brewery actively uses Miyagi-grown rice such as Sasanishiki and pursues sake that conveys the land, its people, and their way of life. In recent years, it has also embraced contract cultivation of rare rice varieties and initiatives in circular agriculture in collaboration with local farmers. Blending the sensibilities of a younger generation of brewers with inherited tradition, Onuma Shuzoten continues to craft sake that reflects the terroir of Miyagi.
