About the Brewery
Domaine Kosei is a winery in Shiojiri’s Kikyogahara district, Nagano Prefecture, dedicated exclusively to Merlot. In the 1950s, Goichi Hayashi and his son Mikio pioneered high grafting techniques, enabling their Merlot vines to survive harsh winters that devastated other grapes. Their efforts established Kikyogahara as one of Japan’s leading Merlot regions, a legacy carried on by the winery today.
Blessed with a continental climate, long hours of sunshine, and volcanic ash–derived kuroboku soils that balance drainage and water retention, Shiojiri provides ideal conditions for Merlot. Domaine Kosei wines embody the essence of this terroir and the unwavering spirit of those who first rooted Merlot in Japan.
