About the Brewery
Okushiri Winery is located on Okushiri Island in southwestern Hokkaido, and conducts everything from grape cultivation to winemaking on the island. Surrounded by a rich primeval beech forest and highly transparent sea, the island has a relatively mild climate due to the influence of the Tsushima Warm Current, providing a mineral-rich environment unique to grape cultivation. Cultivation began in 1999 using the island's wild grapes, and currently around 65,000 grapes, including European varieties, are grown. The winery began full-scale operations in 2008, and its wines express the unique flavor of the sea breeze from the Sea of Japan and the rich mineral content of the terroir. With a long-term perspective, Okushiri Winery aims to make wine that takes advantage of the characteristics of the region and nature, and strives to produce wine that is loved around the world.
