About the Brewery

We at Watanabe Shuzojo brew shochu using only agricultural products from our two ‘hometowns’: sweet potatoes and other ingredients grown by our family in Tano, Miyazaki, and ingredients from Ehime, the birthplace of our first head, Sugashi, and second head, Kazuo.
We want as many people as possible to enjoy shochu that only we can make, here and by our hands. But what we aim for is not a crowd-pleasing shochu; even if it’s just one in ten thousand, we want to make a spirit that someone will call truly delicious from the bottom of their heart. Doing the obvious things conscientiously, we will continue to devote ourselves step by step as a family and with our brewers.
Over a century ago, our founder Sugashi harbored great ambitions, crossed the Pacific to America, and returned with knowledge and skills. Now it is our turn to inherit his aspirations and cross the seas to share Japan’s distilled-spirit culture of authentic shochu with the world.
