About the Brewery

Masahiro Shuzo was founded in 1883 (Meiji 16) in Shuri, the castle town of the Ryukyu Kingdom. The founder was Shobun Higa, son of Shozoku Higa, who served as head chef to the Ryukyu court.
At the time, only those licensed by the royal government were allowed to make awamori. Within that context, the founder Shobun began awamori-making under the house name ‘Hochu Higa,’ granted by the king to his father for his culinary prowess, along with a license to produce awamori.
For more than 140 years, Masahiro Shuzo has been known for its production techniques, quality, and passion for innovation—and that passion is alive today.
