Bungo Meijo
Shochu
About the Brewery
Bungo Meijo was founded in 1910 (Meiji 43) in Honjo, Saiki City, as the Kariu Shuzojo sake brewery.
Oita Prefecture originally had a thriving sake-brewing industry, but with the arrival of the shochu boom our main products shifted from sake to shochu.
In particular, the huge boom in barley shochu in the 1970s led us to ramp up full-scale production of barley shochu. During this period we launched Bungo Taro, which later became a flagship brand.
Characterized by a clear profile and soft, easy-drinking mouthfeel, this product has received high acclaim, including winning the Excellence Award in the shochu category at the Kumamoto Regional Taxation Bureau’s Liquor Appraisal for over ten years.
