About the Brewery
Mishima Shochu Muku no Kura is a publicly-operated shochu brewery that started operation in 2018 in Kuroshima, Mishima Village, Kagoshima Prefecture. It was established for the purpose of regional revitalization in order to respond to the issues of population decline and aging faced by Mishima Village, Japan's smallest village (population 374 people, as of 2019).
It is produced using Beniotome, a sweet potato grown on the island, and water from the island, with technical support from villagers, the government office, and a long-established shochu company. This is a rare shochu whose annual production is limited to 10 kiloliters, and it is a special product that is full of local nature and tradition.
