About the Brewery

Tenju Sake Brewery is located in Yajima Town, Yurihonjo City, Akita Prefecture. This town is the starting point for climbing Mt. Chokai, and is an area that produces the best rice in Akita. The history of Yajima Town dates back to the Heian period, and it once prospered as a castle town of Takatoshi Ikoma. Also, surrounded by the rich nature of Mt. Chokai, sake is brewed in an environment suitable for Akita-style low-temperature, long-term fermentation.
Founded in 1830, the sixth generation is currently running the brewery. Using underground water from Mt. Chokai for brewing water and rice grown in the local Koyoshi River basin, we continue to produce sake with a mellow flavor. The name Tenju originates from the Diamond Sutra carved into the cliffs of Mount Tai in China, and imbues the sake with a timeless style, wishing for longevity.
Also, essential to the quality of Tenju's sake is the technical guidance of Masatoshi Hanaoka, the first director of the Akita Prefecture Brewing Experiment Station. Under his guidance, Tenju's sake brewing has made great progress. These teachings have been passed down to this day and are engraved on the sake brewery's signboard.
