About the Brewery

Sakai Winery is one of the oldest wineries in Japan, founded in 1892 by Yaso Sakai in Akayu, Yamagata Prefecture. Mr. Sakai cultivated a vineyard and began making wine by himself, while seeking guidance from Mr. Yunao Kozai of the Imperial University College of Agriculture, and this spirit has been passed down to this day.

Even during the war and the Japanese sake boom, the third generation Mr. Matahira Sakai believed in the future of wine culture and continued his business despite hardships, supported by the family motto of ``Don't be proud in the face of prosperity, never give up in the face of tragedy.'' Afterwards, it was passed on to the fourth generation, Mr. Matahira Sakai, and wine culture finally began to take root. Currently, Mr. Ippei Sakai, who became the fifth generation winery in 2004, is developing the winery while preserving its history and tradition.

Sakai Winery's wine, cultivated in the nature and long history of Akayu, is a special product that is imbued with the unique taste of the region and the spirit of family precepts. We will continue to work on wine making with the same passion.
