About the Brewery
Sumikawa Sake Brewery was founded in 1921 (Taisho 10) by the Sumikawa family, who were rice wholesalers and took over the sake brewery of a relative. In 2021, we will celebrate our 100th anniversary, and we continue to make sake with innovation while preserving tradition. The representative brand ``Toyo Bijin'' was named by the first owner in memory of his late wife, and as the name suggests, it is loved by many people for its beautiful taste.
Mr. Yoshifumi Sumikawa, the current brewery's former chief brewer, was influenced by Mr. Akinori Takagi of Takagi Sake Brewery through off-campus training at Tokyo University of Agriculture, where he learned the passionate attitude of ``sake-making that reduces life.'' Inheriting that spirit, we are striving to make sake together with our friends.
In 2013, it suffered catastrophic damage due to torrential rains, but with the help of many friends and supporters, it was able to recover, and the following year, in 2014, a new sake brewery with three floors above ground was built. By combining the latest technology and traditional techniques, we are opening up a new realm of sake brewing. Sumikawa Sake Brewery is a sake brewery that will continue to evolve while grateful for the support of the community and friends.
