Kagoshima Sake Brewery changed its name in 1987 and made a new start with its representative brand being Satsuma Morohaku. After much trial and error to create a shochu that would appeal to women, in 2001, chief brewer Yasumitsu Kurose released ``Yakiimo Kurose''. The unique flavor that takes advantage of the aroma of roasted sweet potatoes has become a huge hit, and it is popular as the company's signature brand. Shochu has a long history in Satsuma, where distillation techniques were introduced around the 1500s and established as Satsuma Shochu. Akune in particular flourished as a trading base, and its quality was widely praised, with Mitsuhisa Shimazu, the second lord of the Satsuma domain, naming it ``Morohaku'' and praising it highly. At Akune's brewery, which overlooks the East China Sea, we continue to inherit the techniques handed down by the chief brewer Kurose, and work diligently to make shochu using the power of the sea breeze and yeast that live in the brewery. Kagoshima Sake Brewery is loved by many consumers for its attitude of continuing to take on new challenges while preserving tradition.
